Winter Pool Covers For Inground Pools

Winter covers for in-ground pools are designed to fit over the pool’s surface. They are available in both standard and custom shapes to match different pool designs.

Solid or mesh options help prevent algae buildup and reduce cleaning time in the spring, while safety covers provide added security throughout the off-season. Installation involves water bags or anchor systems to ensure the cover stays in place during heavy winds or snowfall.

Winter Pool Cover Above Ground

Above-ground winter covers are designed for easy installation and protection against debris, UV rays, and freezing temperatures.

Most covers come in round or oval shapes and are secured using a cable-and-winch system to create a snug fit. To prevent ice damage, an air pillow is usually placed beneath the cover to absorb pressure as the water freezes. For additional stability, optional cover clips or wraps can be used to guard against strong winds and changing weather.

How to Install a Pool Cover for Winter?

Step 1

Clean and Balance the Pool

Vacuum the pool and remove all debris. Brush the walls and floor thoroughly. Test and balance pH, chlorine, and alkalinity. Shock the pool and run the filter for at least 24 hours.

Step 2

Lower the Water Level

Drain the water below the skimmer’s mouth. Above-ground: 1–2 inches below skimmer. In-ground: Follow manufacturer guidelines.

Step 3

Remove Accessories

Remove ladders, diving boards, skimmer baskets, hoses, and other accessories. Store them in a clean, dry place for the season.

Step 4

Add Winterizing Chemicals

Add algaecide and winterizing chemicals to protect against algae and bacteria. Follow dosage instructions based on pool size.

Step 5

Install the Pool Cover

Above-Ground: Spread evenly, secure with cable/winch, place air pillow, use cover clips/wraps. In-Ground: Lay cover carefully, secure with water bags/weights, overlap evenly.

Step 6

Check and Tighten

Walk around the pool and ensure the cover is snug and secure. Tighten straps or cables to prevent sagging or flapping in the wind.

How to Choose the Right Winter Pool Cover?

01.

Identify Your Pool Type

Do you need an above-ground pool cover or an in-ground pool cover?

Start by selecting a cover designed specifically for your pool type. Using the wrong type can lead to inadequate protection or an improper fit.

02.

Measure Shape and Dimensions

Carefully measure your pool’s length, width, and shape. For rectangular pools, measure the length and width. For non-rectangular shapes, measure the longest and widest points.

You will also need to account for any obstructions like steps, ladders, or diving boards, and the radius of rounded corners.

03.

Choose the Right Cover Material

  • Solid Covers: Best for full protection, these block sunlight, debris, and rainwater. They help reduce algae growth but often require a cover pump to remove standing water.
  • Mesh Covers: These allow water to pass through while keeping out leaves and debris. They are lighter and easier to handle, with minimal maintenance required.
  • Safety Covers: Ideal for households with children or pets, these are securely anchored and support weight to prevent accidents. Available in both mesh and solid versions.
04.

Consider Your Local Climate

Harsh Winters: If you live in a region with snow, ice, or strong winds, choose a heavy-duty cover made from reinforced, UV-resistant materials.

Mild Climates: In areas with minimal snowfall, a standard mesh or lightweight solid cover may be sufficient.

05.

Look for Key Features

  • Durability: UV-resistant material, double-stitched seams, and strong edges.
  • Ease of Installation: Grommets, winch systems, or water bag loops.
  • Warranty: Check for at least 2 to 5 years of coverage.
06.

Set Your Budget

Basic winter covers are cheaper but may need yearly replacement.

Safety covers and high-quality mesh or solid covers cost more initially but last longer.

How to Take Care of a Winter Pool Cover?

Mark the edges of your cover: Use stakes and rope around the pool to visually mark the area. This prevents accidents, especially when snow hides the pool outline.

Keep the cover tight: Make sure the springs or straps have even tension and stay halfway stretched. Check and adjust them regularly to keep the cover snug and secure.

Watch the water level: Don’t let the water drop too low, especially during snowy months. Similarly, don’t let the water touch the underside of the cover, as it might create a wet spot, attracting debris and making the cover dirty.

Keep the cover clean: Use a leaf net, blower, or soft brush to remove leaves and twigs. Don’t forget to clean around straps and springs, too.

Fix holes quickly: Inspect the cover often and patch any holes right away to stop small damage from getting worse. Ask a pool expert if you are unsure how to do it.

Don’t stress about snow: Pool covers and hardware in good condition can handle snow loads. No need to shovel it off unless it is unusually heavy.

Check safety features: If you have a safety cover, inspect all clips, anchors, and tension straps regularly to make sure they are still working as intended.

Frequently Asked Questions - Winter Pool Covers

1. What Is The Best Winter Pool Cover For Canadian Winters?

The best winter pool cover for Canadian climates is one that’s custom-fit and built from durable, UV-resistant material. At The Cover Brothers, we offer Smart Drain covers for easy water drainage, solid winter covers for full debris protection, and leaf nets to reduce cleanup time, all designed specifically for harsh Canadian winters.

2. Are Winter Pool Covers Worth It In Canada?

Absolutely. A premium winter pool cover helps prevent debris buildup, protects your pool liner, reduces algae growth, and maintains water quality. It also protects your pool from freeze damage, which is crucial in Canadian regions where winter temperatures regularly drop below zero.

3. Do I Need A Custom-Fit Winter Pool Cover?

Yes. A custom winter pool cover ensures a proper seal around your pool, minimizing gaps that let in leaves, dirt, or snow. Our covers are tailored to your pool’s exact shape and size—whether above-ground or in-ground, for better protection and a longer lifespan.

4. How do Smart Drain winter covers work?

Smart Drain covers feature a mesh drainage panel that allows melted snow and rain to flow into the pool while blocking out debris. This design eliminates the need for a pump, making them a convenient, low-maintenance choice for Canadian pool owners.

5. How long do winter pool covers last?

With proper care, our winter pool covers can last 7 to 10 years or more. All of our covers are made in Canada using reinforced stitching, UV protection, and cold-resistant materials designed for long-term durability.

6. Can I buy winter pool covers online in Canada?

Yes! At The Cover Brothers, you can easily buy premium winter pool covers online. Just select your pool shape, enter your dimensions, and choose the cover type that best suits your needs. We ship across Canada.

What is the best way to cover a pool for the winter?

Use a properly fitted winter pool cover secured with water bags or anchored springs. Make sure the pool is clean and chemically balanced before covering.

Should I put a winter cover on my pool?

Yes. A winter cover protects your pool from debris, algae growth, UV damage, and accidents. It also saves you time and money on spring cleanup and maintenance.

Is green or black better for a winter pool cover?

Black covers absorb more sunlight, which can help melt snow and ice faster. Green covers are more popular for aesthetic reasons. Functionally, both work well, but make sure that the cover is UV-resistant and durable.

Should you drain water off the pool cover in winter?

Yes. Regularly remove standing water with a cover pump to prevent sagging, tearing, or damaging the cover. Mesh covers typically don’t need draining, but solid ones need occasional drainage to avoid sagging and tearing.

How often should I clean my pool cover?

Check and clean it every few weeks. Remove leaves, twigs, and debris using a soft brush or blower to prevent buildup, mould, or damage to the cover.

Does a pool get warmer with a cover on or off?

With the cover on, the pool retains more heat, especially during sunny winter days. A cover helps trap solar heat and prevent heat loss due to evaporation.
